Where – When – Why ?
The Isle of Skye is located in northwestern Scotland and is accessible from the mainland by a bridge.
Country: Scotland / Capital: Edinburgh
Currency: British Pound £
This island is a step not to be missed during a visit to Scotland. The scenery is breathtaking, the people are really nice, and even if the cities are not very big we eat very very well!
Scotland is one of my favorite countries for its landscapes and culture, I wanted to explore a little deeper nooks that I did not know yet, and I did well!
I left 5 days. That’s enough I think to have a good idea of ??the island and the Highlands.
From Edinburgh we took the road to Skye by making a hook at Glencoe and Eilean Donan Castle.
Once on Skye, our base was a cottage in the middle of nowhere near Culnacnoc.
Day 1: Arrival in Edinburgh early in the morning and drive to Eilean Donan Castle via Glencoe.
Day 2: On Skye, hike in the Fairy Pool and Neist Point Lighthouse.
Day 3: Fairy Glen and hike in Les Quiraings
Day 4: Hike to Old Man of Storr.
Day 4-5: Back to Edinburgh via Glencoe, Oban, Deanston (tour of the distillery).
I recommend you take a look at this website which is super good for hiking:
Here is a small summary of the main activities / things not to miss:
One of the most beautiful landscapes of the island. The ballad is easy and lasts 1h-1h30 taking time and taking pictures. There is a climb to return to the car park but it is not difficult. There are several waterfalls with pools that change color with the sky.
Before reaching it we see a kind of hill with an interesting triangular shape. The path is very well indicated, impossible to be wrong. The lighthouse is hidden, so it will take at least 30min to reach it. The coast is beautiful.
Very interesting landscape that immediately reminded me of small mountains Hobbits … It’s pretty funny and you can easily spend an hour chewing around and above each hill.
One word three letters: WOW! Beautiful landscapes. Beautiful hike of 3h (with stops to take pictures and drone). Landscapes breathtaking from the parking! The hike requires a good physical condition, especially if it rains because there is a lot of mud in places. Not to miss.
Interesting rock formation. Hilly hike, good shoes and time to catch your breath. The hike is short, about 1 hour. Going to the right once at the foot of the rock, you will have a better look. Going to the rock from the left you have a wonderful view of the mountains and lakes.
I made reservations on Airbnb. I highly recommend the following two accommodations:
* The Schoolhouse: 5min walk from Eilean Donan Castle. Very cozy, nice owner. Not far from two places to eat at night. The breakfast is top!
* Taigh ‘n Kings: nice cottage well renovated and equipped. There is a fireplace. It is in the middle of nowhere so it’s super silent and in the evening you can admire the stars. It is not far from several village where you can eat, not far from the beach and other main attractions (Quiraings and Old Man Storr). Perfect base on Skye.
We rented a car from Edinburgh with Avis. For the 5 days we paid 265 euros rental and gasoline.
The roads are not always well maintained, we cross very often sheep and cows.
There are many one-lane roads with areas to give way.
It did not have much traffic so it was perfect for driving.
We drive to the left in Scotland .
Well the United Kingdom is expensive. But we manage to find something to eat not too expensive in pubs. Count between £ 8 and £ 15 for a dish.
Do Not Miss
Do not miss the sunsets and hikes!
Car: Read the conditions well as we had unnecessary fees, take pictures and videos of the car before leaving the agency and before returning it, to avoid unpleasant surprises.
Do not sleep late; prefer to get up early and laze on the beach, rather than spend three hours parking, find a place to put your towel, and hear howling people around you.
For meals, ask the dishes are generous because in general the portions are generous and can be shared with two.
